Question 381: To ask the Minister for Agriculture and Food the value of organic vegetable and meat sales in Ireland; the extent by which this particular sector has been growing over the past five years; the comparisons with other countries in the European Union; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The value of the Irish organic food market as a whole has increased from €23 million to €38 million in the five years up to 2003, an average increase of 13% per year. The market has continued to grow over the past year, but at the slightly lower rate of around 10%. The value of the EU market for organic food reached over €10 billion in 2003, and is currently growing at about 8% per year.
