Question 231: To ask the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources if, in view of the statement by the Commission and the Council on the weighing of pelagic fish, he will bring forward an interim arrangement for the current year; and if he will make a statement on the matter. At the Agriculture and Fisheries Council on 21 to 22 December 2004, the Council and Commission agreed a statement on the weighing of pelagic fish with the following wording: The Council invites the Commission to come forward early in 2005 with a proposal to develop a scheme allowing the fish to be weighed after transport from the port of landing. Such a scheme should provide sufficient safeguard to ensure that the fish landed is accounted for and weighed correctly.

The Commission has now brought forward draft proposals which are currently being examined at a technical level. As the rules for weighing pelagic fish are set at EU level, I do not have any significant scope to introduce interim national measures.
