Question 635: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government the grant aid available for the installation of lifts for the disabled in buildings that are used by the public, for example, community centres, churches and parish halls; and if there is no grant aid available, if he will consider introducing such a grant scheme. Such grant assistance is not available from my Department, although I understand that a grant for purposes of this kind has been approved for Kildare County Council by the Dormant Accounts Fund Disbursements Board. My outline local government sectoral plan under the Disability Bill 2004 includes objectives, inter alia, to promote universal access to public spaces, buildings and services owned and operated by local authorities, and to review and update standards set out in part M, access for people with disabilities, of the national building regulations.
