The matter of art teachers who failed to become fully qualified through the technical schools examinations system, which was wound up in 1988, was examined in the course of discussions with the teachers' representative bodies. Arising from these discussions, a course was organised by my Department which gave such teachers the opportunity to become fully qualified. The course, called the NUI diploma in art teaching, was a one-year course run by the National College of Art and Design in the 2001-02 academic year and again in the 2002-03 academic year.
