The issue of public safety zones at State airports was the subject of a study by consultants which was submitted to the Department of Transport and my Department in September 2003. The recommendations in the report are currently being considered by both Departments with a view to submitting proposals to Government shortly. If approved by Government, it is envisaged that public safety zones would be implemented through local development plans. Use of section 207 of the Planning and Development Act 2000, which is designed to allow local authorities to create public rights of way, is not envisaged for this purpose.
