I have been informed by the Garda authorities who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources including personnel that it is not possible to provide this information in the detail requested. However, I am informed that it is not normal practice to replace members deployed temporarily for short periods to other centres.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 314 to 318, inclusive, together.
I have been informed by the Garda authorities who are responsible for the detailed allocation of resources, including personnel, that the personnel strength, all ranks, of the Laois-Offaly division as at 1 October each year since 1997 was as set out as follows:
Year | Number |
1997 | 279 |
1998 | 283 |
1999 | 275 |
2000 | 278 |
2001 | 281 |
2002 | 279 |
2003 | 274 |
2004 | 277 |
Every effort is made to fill vacancies that arise as a result of retirement-promotions etc. in conjunction with the allocation of newly attested gardaà and newly promoted personnel.
Garda management will continue to appraise the policing and administrative strategy employed in the Laois-Offaly division with a view to ensuring an effective Garda service is maintained. The situation will be kept under review and when additional personnel next becomes available the needs of the Laois-Offaly Division will be fully considered within the overall context of the needs of Garda divisions throughout the country.
I have been further informed that of the personnel currently attached to the Laois-Offaly division (all ranks), the following numbers must retire on compulsory grounds, maximum age, over the next three years.
Period | Number |
08/10/04 â 31/10/05 | 2 |
01/11/05 â 31/10/06 | 5 |
01/11/06 â 31/10/07 | 4 |
The figures outlined are based on the rank currently held by the members assigned to the Laois-Offaly division.
The number and rank of gardaà allocated to each district within the Laois-Offaly division as at 1 October, 2004 was as follows:
District | ||||
Rank | Port Laoise | Abbeyleix | Birr | Tullamore |
C/Superintendent | 1 | |||
Superintendent | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Inspector | 3 | 1 | ||
Sergeant | 21 | 6 | 7 | 10 |
Garda | 98 | 32 | 36 | 58 |
Total | 124 | 39 | 44 | 70 |
With respect to the Deputy's question regarding the number of gardaà who have retired or have been transferred from the Laois/Offaly division, I have been informed by the Garda authorities that this information is not readily available and can only be obtained by the disproportionate expenditure of Garda time and resources relative to the information sought.

I have been informed by the Garda authorities that for security and operational reasons it is not Garda policy to disclose the number of gardaà deployed at such locations.
