Question 106: To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs the number of Irish citizens, living abroad, who have obtained passports in the past five years for which figures are available; the breakdown of country of residence into the United Kingdom, the European Economic Area, the United States and other countries; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The following is the number of passports issued for the years 1999 — 2003 in the countries and areas requested by the Deputy.

The total number of passports issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs, at home and abroad, in 2003 was over 550,000. This is 20,000 more than the previous year and more than double the number of passports issued as recently as 1996.
