Question 474: To ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if he intends to introduce legislation to address the anomaly whereby certain local authorities charge solicitors and members of the public for information on the rateable value of a house, while others do not; when he expects to introduce this legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Local authorities are empowered under the Local Government (Financial Provisions) (No. 2) Act 1983 to charge for services provided by them. The decision to charge for any service, including the provision of certificates of rateable valuation, and the levels of any such charge are matters for decision by individual local authorities and I have no proposals to introduce legislation to change this.
