Question 117: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if her attention has been drawn to the report published by the Office of the Director of Consumer Affairs finding a considerable variation in the price of the over-the-counter medicines; the steps she intends to take to prevent exploitation of consumers in this area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I am aware of the report in question, which relates to a survey carried out by the Office of the Director for Consumer Affairs as part of its price awareness campaign.
The survey demonstrates, first, that price competition is operating in the market for over-the-counter medicines, which is a good thingand, secondly, that consumers can benefitfrom comparing the prices of different retail outlets.
More competition and increased consumer vigilance are the best way to deliver value for money to consumers.
