Before I call the Leader to outline the Order of Business, I welcome to the Distinguished Visitors Gallery the ambassador from Finland; our great friends in the European Union. On 6 December 1917, 105 years ago, a country with its own government and unique language and rich culture, like ourselves, came into existence.

Over the years, Finland has transformed from a poor, agriculture-based society to a highly digitalised and thriving economy with, I am glad to say, the happiest people in the world for five years in a row. We look forward to learning the secret to happiness from our friends in Finland. Of course, we established strong diplomatic ties more than 60 years ago. We are like-minded partners in making the world a better place for all of its citizens. We work together on the appreciation of peace, nature and heritage and that connects us at a deeper level.

Of course, Finland's contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process is well known and recognised by its former Prime Minister, who was involved in that very important process. I would also like to recall a Finn who was involved and actually participated in the 1916 Rising, although the ambassador informed me that he was not great at shooting so he was put to other duties. One of the most famous citizens to come from Europe, of course, is Santa Claus. He has promised to bring light, brightness and happiness; the secret the Finns have that we would all like to learn.

On Finland's national day, I thank the ambassador for honouring us with his presence in Seanad Éireann as we approach our 100th anniversary. I wish him and all the people of Finland a very happy independence day. I thank him for being here with us today.
