It is a great honour for me to welcome members of the 69th New York State Volunteers, under the command of Colonel Jim Tierney, and accompanied by Senator Daly. Very few Irish people need to be reminded of the strong historical connections between this country and the Fighting 69th, one of the most famous US Army regiments. Those of us who have had the honour of parading down Fifth Avenue in New York will be very familiar with the parade formation of the Fighting 69th and the affection in which they are held by Irish Americans. That is reciprocated here among Irish citizens, so it is a particular honour for this House to welcome the volunteers from the Fighting 69th.
