I wish everyone a happy new year. I have received notice from Senator Deirdre Clune that, on the motion for the Adjournment of the House today, she proposes to raise the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Social Protection to ensure that redundancy payments due to the Vita Cortex workers in Cork are paid.

I have also received notice from Senator Jim Walsh of the following matter:

The need for the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade to meet the Nigerian ambassador to express serious concerns at the appalling murders and persecution of Christians living in north Nigeria, seek assurances that the Nigerian Government will take effective steps to prevent the Islamic organisation, Boko Haram, from continuing its appalling campaign and, if necessary, prevail upon it to seek international assistance to protect the Christians who are under threat.

I have also received notice from Senator Jillian van Turnhout of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Health to clarify if he accepts that there is a clear case for the provision of rehabilitation services for stroke survivors and others with neurological conditions in light of the recent Irish Heart Foundation report on the cost of stroke in Ireland and the need to allocate the necessary funding thereto.

I have also received notice from Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaighof the following matter:

Le fiafrú don Aire Cumarsáide agus Acmhainní Nádúrtha ar úsáid an tAire riamh, nó an bhfuil sé i gceist aige úsáid a bhaint as a chuid cumhachtaí faoi roinn 16 den Acht um Fhorbairt Mianraí 1979, le hacmhainní mianraí neamhfhorbartha timpeall na tíre a athghábháil don Stát agus go háirithe iad sin i Leitir Núis, Conamara, Contae na Gaillimhe, Réimse Oscailte 3928.

I have also received notice from Senator Thomas Byrne of the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Justice and Equality to outline any proposed structural changes to the Garda Síochána in County Meath in terms of Garda district boundaries.

I have also received notice from Senator Mark Daly of the following matter:

The need for the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade to detail the efforts being made to ensure the passing of the current legislation being proposed in Washington regarding visas for the undocumented Irish in the United States.

I have also received notice from Senator Brian Ó Domhnaillof the following matter:

The need for the Minister for Education and Skills to clarify the reason he is targeting small rural schools for increased enrolments before the publication of the value for money review of small schools.

I regard the matters raised by the Senators as suitable for discussion on the Adjournment. I have selected the matters raised by Senators Clune, Walsh, van Turnhout and Ó Clochartaigh and they will be taken at the conclusion of business. The other Senators may give notice on another day of the matters they wish to raise.

I have to inform the House that a letter dated 4 January 2011 has been received from the Secretary to the Government in regard to the reassignment of a Minister of State and the appointment of a Minister of State. The correspondence will be published in the Official Journal of Proceedings of the Seanad.
