Water Services (Amendment) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed)

It is important that those contributions are heard. I thank the Chair for giving us an opportunity to make them. I would like to clarify Fianna Fáil's position on this Bill. We voted against it on Second Stage because even though we agree with the overall objective, which is to try to protect this country's water courses, we disagree outright with the manner in which the Bill has been constructed. The Government is proposing to criminalise people. The biggest bone of contention in the context of this Bill is the Government's failure to provide for a grant scheme to allow people to meet the cost of upgrading their septic tanks.
