On a weekly, if not daily, basis we speak on Iraq so we should recognise the success of yesterday's election in Iraq. Looking from afar this House and other European parliamentarians feel they know what is best for the people of Iraq but they want to chart their own way forward. That against almost insurmountable odds, almost 70% of Iraqis voted in an election is an amazing achievement. Hopefully it is the beginning of good days for Iraqis and will herald a new and positive beginning. Along with that development we must welcome the changed policy position of President George W. Bush on torture and the detaining of prisoners. The work of Senator John McCain is bearing fruit and if this is to be the new American position on prisoners and torture it is welcome.
