Official Languages (Equality) Bill 2002: Committee Stage (Resumed). SECTION 9.

The reason for this amendment is that the First Schedule of the Bill refers to public companies which may be privatised in the future. From our experience of the privatisation of Eircom, people who had always received an Irish language service from Telecom Éireann had to fight hard to retain even a limited service. We cannot understand why the State, which has invested heavily in public bodies since its foundation, should not attach a condition in favour of our national language when disposing of these companies. Rights are again being denied and that is the argument Senator McHugh has asked me to advance on his behalf.
