I move:

That leave be granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend the Statistics Act 1993, in relation to the first Census of Population of Ireland taken since the establishment of the State; to afford that census a special heritage status and to have such released to the public for historical, genealogical and other research as part of the national centenary of the 1916 Rising, and the Decade of Centenaries, commemorations.

Ba mhaith liom an Bille Staidrimh (Céad Bliain Éirí Amach 1916) 2016 a thairiscint. It is a Bill close to your heart, a Cheann Comhairle. You introduced a similar Bill in the previous Dáil. It is appropriate that we use the opportunity of the centenary of 1916 to make an exception to the rules that are contained within the Statistics Act 1993, to move away from the 100-year rule to one of 90 years in this case, but if need be to make it 70 years as an exception, and that we would announce that intention this year in order that the Taoiseach can put in place the required steps so that we can move towards the digitisation of the records.

Since this is a Private Members' Bill, Second Stage must, under Standing Orders, be taken in Private Members' time.
