Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 32 dealing with two different topics. I will call on Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to debate the following urgent matter: the threat posed to the country by the Government's lack of ability to engage with the concerns of the people in a time of great hardship and strain, with jobs being lost and houses repossessed with the result that people are depressed and fearful; its answer to such difficulties being to question why such people do not commit suicide. That is a statement attributed to the Taoiseach in last Saturday's Irish Independent. He has a duty to apologise for that remark as his predecessor did. I call on him today to apologise to the people.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to debate the following urgent matter: the severe flooding around the country with the consequent huge scale of financial losses to householders, businesspeople and farmers and if the Government will state clearly if compensation by way of humanitarian aid will be made available to persons whose properties have failed to get insurance cover because of previous flooding claims and if humanitarian aid will be made available to families whose houses have been flooded and who may be waiting for five to six weeks or more for insurance claims to be processed.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to debate the following urgent matter: the impact of the flooding in many parts of the country and the fact that many of the homes affected were built in areas where there has been a history of flooding but where the planning authorities gave permission for housing developments when a more rigorous procedure might have decided that the risk of flooding meant that the sites in question were unsuitable and also that adequate funding be made available to those affected.
