I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to discuss why the Minister for Finance has agreed to breach his own guidelines in respect of the pay of bank chief executives in the case of AIB; why an outside chief executive has not been required by the Government, and the extent to which the board appointing the chief executive has been changed since the guarantee was introduced.

Ba mhaith liom cead a lorg chun an Dáil a chur ar athló faoi Bhuan-Ordú 32 chun plé práineach a dhéanamh ar an ghné ríthábhachtach seo a leanas a phlé, the failure to reconsider the proposed Christmas bonus cuts which will deny hundreds of thousands of children a deserved Christmas because their families rely on the much needed bonus to cover extra expenses which occur at this costly time of year and will result in parents turning to money lenders, inevitably compounding existing family financial problems forcing them into further catastrophic debt in the new year.

I, too, seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to discuss the following matter of urgent national importance, namely, the need for the Minister for Education and Science to take immediate steps to resolve the difficulties in VECs and local authorities across the State whereby, due to the unprecedented number of student grant applications, the recruitment embargo placed on both bodies and the unavailability of overtime, many students must wait until January to receive their first student grant payments; and due to the delay on student grant payments, many students are defaulting on rent, unable to purchase vital college books, equipment and supplies, and many students currently attending third level institutions are not registered leaving them without access to crucial services such as libraries. There is clearly no prospect of us ever achieving a smart economy while we shamefully neglect this critical human capital resource.
