I seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 32 to raise a matter of national interest requiring urgent consideration, namely, the very serious concern in the housing sector that 35% of those living in private rented accommodation are already living below the poverty line; that 544 privately rented units out of 999 inspected by Dublin City Council were found not to be in compliance with minimum standards regulations; that people are very often forced into private rented accommodation as a result of the lack of social housing units available in their local authority and the subsequent threat of homelessness; that the standards regulations regarding the private rented sector have not been updated since 1993; and the need for the Minister of State with responsibility for housing to address these concerns as a matter of priority and to ensure that, at the very least, funding for 9,125 social housing units, as promised for this year in Towards 2016, is provided to afford people with sustainable housing options and prevent further risk of poverty.
