Requests to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31

5:00 pm

Jerry Cowley (Mayo, Independent)

I wish to seek the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 31 to raise a matter of national importance, namely, to ask the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and the Cabinet, if they are aware of the extent of the flooding of Crossmolina, County Mayo where several streets of the town are under water, and several businesses also, with devastating consequences for the livelihoods of their owners, and to discuss what steps need to be taken by Government to remedy the present situation which is all due to the River Deel bursting its banks, which happened previously in 1989 when a large section of the town was similarly affected; to discuss what help will be given to ease the plight of the citizens of Crossmolina, many of whom have had to abandon their homes, including the local curate; and to discuss what essential steps need to be taken to ease the situation, including financial help, and what long-term steps need to be taken to prevent a further recurrence.
