Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sport

Integration of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and the Camogie Association with the GAA: Gaelic Players Association

2:00 am

Mr. Tom Parsons:

I do not have a personal opinion, or I am not educated enough to know the science behind it for me to credibly say there is a safety issue. I can just say with all my heart that I know how important inclusion is in sport. It is just a non-negotiable. I know there are players and athletes who identify in a certain way and are afraid to bring their whole selves to the game, and that is really sad. Sport should be about total inclusion and being able to bring yourself to the game. We are absolutely committed to that. The Deputy will have seen that much of the work we do in this space around LGBTQI+ is to try to allow athletes to show more vulnerability and leadership. However, athletes are afraid to be the face of this. They just want to be themselves and not to be in the public limelight. Our president, Dónal Óg Cusack, has shown huge leadership for males and we really encourage more athletes to do the same.
