State Response to Online Disinformation and Media and Digital Literacy: Discussion (Resumed)

1:30 pm

Ms Aoife Gallagher:

I will speak to the hate legislation. It is clear that our current legislation is not working. It is either not being enforced properly or it is not suitable for the environment we are now in. We released some research a couple of weeks ago where we documented incidents of anti-migrant violence over three and a half months. We documented more than 60 incidents. These are not just people saying bad words online. These are all offline incidents and are really horrific and horrible. We are only scratching the surface because we are only seeing what is posted online. There is a playbook here. The people who do this will go out on the street and film the confrontation. The most horrific confrontation they find they will post online. That gets fed into an online ecosystem that is also shared by far-right figures internationally. All of these videos are consistently inciting hate and violence towards migrants and asylum seekers. These people consistently post these videos online under their own names. They are posting evidence of themselves committing these crimes and nothing is being done about it. There is obviously something missing there. Either we enforce the legislation that we have or we need something else.
