I echo Ms Gallagher's concerns. We cannot lose sight of the fact that we are talking about big for-profit corporations that have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders to build that profit. When we talk about the use of social media, we need to elevate it to the fact that we are talking about big corporations that are making profits. To do that, they will do anything they can to have a captive audience so the more they can feed people and the more advertisements people can see, the better it is for the company as it will make more profits. We are talking about a for-profit industry. The recommender system and that amplification are key to reducing the harms that are caused right now. We cannot overstate that enough to this committee.
