Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Businesses: Discussion (Resumed)
Mr. Ed Brophy:
If I can come in very quickly in respect of Ireland, Senator Sherlock's question is very pertinent because in the next 12 to 24 months we will see an increasing focus on AI policy and regulation at member state level. The focus has been on Brussels with the AI Act. It is interesting that Spain has been out in front but I think Ireland has been quite close, actually. The Department is really looking at this now in terms of designation of a national competent authority. It is important to say what that national competent authority will do. It will implement the legislation at national level but will also perform market surveillance activities and nominate someone to the European artificial intelligence board. It will play a key role and it is important that the Government is thinking about that now. It will address some of the issues the Senator is thinking about in respect of product and policy at a national level. It is super important that Ireland is doing that. Spain has got the lead but increasingly we will see it develop over the next 12 to 24 months within the various member states.
