Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation

Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Businesses: Discussion (Resumed)

Mr. Jeremy Rollison:

There are three buckets in which to put the issues in terms of policymakers encouraging the use of generative AI. It is not only about focusing once again on the benefits, of which there are many; part of it is also education around the risk. The three buckets are really about driving awareness and making people understand what is out there and available. In that I would include the risks versus benefits dynamic we talked about earlier. The skills literacy commitments we discussed will go a huge way and are probably linked to that first bucket.

A point I wanted to make earlier was on the question about promoting innovation. When we get questions from our customers across Europe, particularly SME owners, who may be excited about aspects of this technology, what sometimes arises is the need for clarity on the rules. They want to understand. They know there are a lot of rules emerging in this space and they have heard about the risks. It is hard for them to digest all the information. They do not have large legal resources. The more sophisticated these rules become, it is understandable that it is hard for them to navigate that space. The key points are the skills literacy we talked about, driving awareness on both ends and then clarifying rules, in so far as possible, in order that SMEs feel comfortable engaging with the technology.
