Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Businesses: Discussion (Resumed)
Mr. Kieran McCorry:
Might I add to that very briefly? I realise the Senator’s question was very much directed towards representatives of multinationals in the room, but I believe that while ambiguity on what constitutes high risk is difficult enough for big companies like Microsoft Ireland to deal with, it is similarly difficult for smaller companies. That is going to be an opportunity, but also a challenge. Some assistance or supports for smaller companies to allow them to determine how they can be compliant with the Act will be paramount. Let me highlight the point I made in my opening statement. We see more generative AI adopted in multinationals than in indigenous companies due to resources. The exact same thing is true in determining compliance. It was reassuring on 7 January to see that the Government published its interim public sector guidelines for the responsible use of AI, specifically in the public sector, but it would be great to see something similar done for industry more broadly, now that the Act has been adopted.
