Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Businesses: Discussion (Resumed)
Mr. Ed Brophy:
Let me bring it down to the national level. The AI Act was adopted on 21 May and will be in force in June. Therefore, it is pretty early days, but we are very glad to see that the Irish Government, through the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, has already issued consultation information on national implementation. One of the key questions concerns determining what body will be the national competent authority in Ireland regarding the AI Act. That is a big issue that needs to be discussed and debated. There are a few options. You could have a centralised model, with a single national competent authority, or a vertical or sector-specific model, whereby key regulators in key sectors, such as financial services, consumer protection and the environment, regulate AI in their sectors. This entails a really big question, and Ireland is one of the first member states to get ahead of it. We really welcome the debate.
