Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation

Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Businesses: Discussion (Resumed)

Mr. Ryan Meade:

All of our opening statements mentioned skills, and we have gone into that. I would add adoption to that. One of the programmes we offer online is Google AI essentials. It is a short course but by the end of it, anyone using it has experienced what it is like to use a generative AI tool, and it takes away a lot of the mystery that might apply.

The other point is around AI literacy. As we have heard, these technologies a bit differently from previous waves, such as the World Wide Web, the mobile age and so on. This is a new era and there are things people need to know about how it works. They need to know, for example, how a large language model works and the nature of the results it might produce, how your data might be used when you are interacting with it and so on. We are looking at how we can play a role in that regard. Many of the organisations the Deputy mentioned, including SOLAS and others, definitely have a role. An opportunity exists now. It is easy for people to take their first steps, even by experiencing AI and having a go with it. That might not have been the case a year or two ago.

The Government's AI strategy anticipated this issue in 2021. If we are going to drive the best potential of AI adoption, we need to deal with trust and take everyone along together. There are some good actions in the strategy in that respect.
