Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community

Múnlú ár dTodhchaí Dátheangaigh agus Seirbhísí Poiblí Dátheangacha: Fondúireacht Eolaíochta Éireann

Dr. Ciar?n Seoighe:

Tá cúpla focal agam le cur leis an bhfreagra sin. In some ways, I feel obligated to represent the voice of the public as expressed in Creating Our Future. Many of the hundreds of submissions we got that related to the Irish language were on things we have talked about. Professor Ó Duibhir was talking about the challenges in that regard. To reverse the somewhat negative story regarding the risk of digital extinction Dr. Lynn has been speaking about, a positive story has been raised a couple of times as well. I refer to the digital opportunity that we can grab to make Irish more accessible. Anyone who has kids will know they are stuck to these devices. We can take that opportunity to make Irish more accessible. Duolingo and other things are already out there but there are more opportunities related to what the Cathaoirleach was speaking about in respect of Google Maps and other things. Drawing them in and making Irish more accessible and easier through the digital world is as much an opportunity as it is a threat. Something that came across in the voice of the public is that we should take this opportunity and run with it.
