Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation

Cost of Living, Minimum Wage Increases and Report of Low Pay Commission: Discussion

Mr. Ultan Courtney:

That is an important question because the commission is not in the business of chasing inflation but of trying to put together a proposition that looks at progressive increases over time without doing damage to the competitiveness of the companies covered by the national minimum wage. On that basis, we are restricted in what recommendations we can make and in the things we can take into consideration. We are also restricted in time. My understanding is that the only time we make a recommendation is July of any particular year which is when we make the recommendation. After that, it is up to the Government to decide what to do with it.
