Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs

Food Security in the European Union: European Commission for Agriculture and Rural Development

Mr. Michael Scannell:

I thank the committee. It was a very good discussion. It is reassuring to see the level of interest and knowledge among the committee on these food security-related issues. On Georgia, the relevant service in the Commission is the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, DG NEAR. We work very closely with it. As the committee knows, Georgia has ambitions to become a member of the EU but there is a lot of work ahead. The European Council deliberated on that several weeks ago. I do not have its conclusions in front of me on the position it took on where Georgia stands in the queue in terms of the assessment of its membership. It is very prominent on the radar screen. Food security will be very hot on the agenda for the next several months, as it should be. I thank the committee and wish the members a good day.
