Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation
European Works Councils and Related Irish Legislation: Discussion
Mr. Tom Hayes:
Yes. I will not put a number on it. I have been too long in labour relations to give the game away. The Government could say it needed to look at a slightly different figure. Mr. Sheridan mentioned that the two countries with biggest fine levels are, ironically, the UK, where the maximum fine is £100,000, and Spain, where the biggest fine, €150,000, is available. The committee should not take me up wrong; I am not suggesting we go to those sorts of numbers. If, however, the figure were to move beyond £10,000, I would not necessarily see a problem with that. Ms McKeon has first-hand experience of this.
