European Works Councils and Related Irish Legislation: Discussion

Mr. Denis Sheridan:

As was said, European works councils deal with transnational issues. The directive defines a transnational issue as one that affects two or more countries. What we see more and more is that, for example, Germany will make a decision as to what happens in Ireland. That will be a transnational issue because it affects two or more countries. It is therefore not really a domestic thing; it is about the whole business. The company will take all the representatives from around Europe and explain the business to them, telling them what is happening in each individual company and in the business as a whole. A transnational matter, however, is one that affects two or more countries. That is what the directive clearly states.
