General Scheme of the Right to Request Remote Work Bill 2022: Discussion (Resumed)

Ms Joanne Mangan:

With the eligibility criteria, for the most part if a job can be done remotely, it can be done remotely from the outset. As I mentioned in my statement, it is reinforcing a misconception about remote work that we need to be in the office to get ramped up. That sets everybody off on the wrong foot and basically says that the office is better for certain things. In this case, as Mr. Hegarty spoke about, the office is not necessarily a better place for onboarding. Onboarding can be done from home, we just need to put the right processes and policies in place to make that work.

We would like to see the eligibility criteria removed on a practical level. For example, people working for an organisation that will offer them remote work in six months' time have to wait six months before they know they can relocate. I live in Athenry. If I apply for a job, I cannot apply for one in Dublin. I am missing out on those opportunities because I need to be in an office for six months which would not work for me. That creates an issue. Does the Deputy have another question?
