CRISPR-Cas9 Gene Editing: Discussion
Mr. John Spink:
I echo what Professor O'Mara said. In our breeding programmes, we use all of the genomic techniques we are allowed to use, which are those that are classed as conventional breeding. If gene editing was deemed to be a conventional technique and if there was not a great cost attached to complying with the regulations, I am certain we would use it. We have used genomic selection to stack disease and pest resistances within newer potato varieties. If we could do that faster and more efficiently, we certainly would.
