We will not get information from companies unless we have the legal demand to achieve it. That does not apply only to dealing with Internet-related material. In circumstances with which I would be more familiar, going back a number of years, we would, for example, look for information from the banks on money laundering related to drug trafficking. The banks wanted us to come in with orders under section 63 of the Criminal Justice Act 1994 and would then immediately hand over the material. If we went knocking on the door and suggesting the banks had material that could prove money laundering or information about it, the banks could not give it. They needed to get the court order but would then immediately provide the information to us. That, of course, can only be achieved if the appropriate legislation is in place. The less complex the legislation which makes it crystal clear that companies are to provide the information, the fewer difficulties there will be in acquiring it.
