Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action

Reduction of Carbon Emissions of 51% by 2030: Discussion (Resumed)

Mr. Dara Lynott:

There is also a question of whether that cap is appropriate. When those caps were put in place, there was a different ambition around renewables. If we are saying that the amount of renewables is going to double to meet a 40% increase in generation, the caps on system services, and on batteries in particular, probably warrant another review, given that those caps were set a time of much lesser ambition. Now that our ambition has grown, it is appropriate for some of those caps for system services to be re-evaluated, particularly if it is as important as our study finds, in respect of delivering the back-up generation in 2030.
