Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action

Reduction of Carbon Emissions of 51% by 2030: Discussion (Resumed)

Mr. Stephen Douglas:

I thank the Chair. At present, we need eight units on at all times due to how the system is configured. For example, in Dublin we need a certain amount of plant to be on at all times to keep the voltage at a certain level. What we are saying in the study is that we can bring the minimum unit requirement down to four from eight. We also say in the study we need to remove all the constraints. We need to build the North-South interconnector and the wires we urgently need. This is an important caveat. In our study, we assume the removal of constraints. This would enable us to reduce the minimum number of units we need to run at all times on the system.
