Joint Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence
Situation in Palestine: Discussion (Resumed)
Mr. Christopher Holt:
I thank the committee for the opportunity today.
I will go back to my initial statement and reiterate that the violence that we see today in Gaza, Israel and in the occupied West Bank does not occur within a vacuum. It occurs in the context and against the backdrop of a 54-year occupation - one that is defined by the violation of Palestinian rights and a lack of accountability, including demolitions, settler violence and settlement expansion.
We must move beyond mere condemnation to pursuing meaningful consequences if we are to have any hope of preventing further violations and ensuring the viability of a two-state solution, which is essential to the safety of Israelis, Palestinians and the region. We must move beyond mere condemnation to meaningful consequences for the violation of Palestinian rights. I will leave the committee with that message. I thank the committee on behalf of the West Bank Protection Consortium for the opportunity to address the committee.
