Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs

Interparliamentary Relations after Brexit: Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for the Executive Office

Ms Emma Sheerin:

Mr. McGrath has covered everything. I would endorse everything said by Deputy Ó Murchú. It is the pragmatic, practical approach to all this. Brexit has been foisted upon us. We can see now that we have a democratic deficit.

The North was probably going to be worst affected by Brexit and we can see that Northern voices are not being listened to by the British Government. On the European side, there was grave concern for the island of Ireland and for protecting the integrity of the peace, the working relationships and the practicalities of people's lives, particularly those the Deputy represents and other Border representatives speak for. Those people cross the Border on a daily, sometimes hourly, basis. All that has to be protected and the implementation of the protocol is about the practicality of that. It is about finding solutions and that is our priority as well.
