Special Committee on Covid-19 Response

Covid-19: Strategic Options for Government Plan to Eliminate Community Transmission

Dr. Tomás Ryan:

I do not see that happening. My view with respect to Northern Ireland is that we cannot treat it with any greater degree of stringency than we treat different counties in Ireland. If there are travel restrictions between Dublin and Kerry, then it is legitimate to have the same degree of restrictions between northern and southern Ireland, because it is a local issue, not a national issue. I do not see us having testing to go between Dublin and Kerry, and therefore I do not think it will happen to go between northern and southern Ireland. The solution is to go for an all-Ireland approach with the co-operation of Stormont and local communities in Northern Ireland.
