Joint Oireachtas Committee On Key Issues Affecting The Traveller Community

Traveller Education: Discussion

Ms Eileen Flynn:

Traveller girls and women have always experienced inequality in Irish society. We are not just second-class citizens as women, we are third-class citizens because of the intersectionality that goes with being a Traveller. For many Traveller children, it is a struggle to get to school every day due to their living accommodation and schools and the system often do not understand that. Traveller children have little or no support from the education system.

I will have to call on Ms Joyce to do the presentation because I do not want to feck it up. I have just had a baby and I did not realise it would be so difficult. I am really sorry.
