Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality

Spent Convictions: Discussion

Ms Fíona Ní Chinnéide:

I am referring to international figures. They state employment reduces the risk of reoffending, between one third and a half. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in the UK stated that when people with criminal records find employment their likelihood of reoffending is cut by two thirds. It is quite dramatic. We recognise that getting a job in itself does not solve all the issues. There is much pro-social interaction, contributing to society and being part of the enfranchised population that goes with that. Receiving a job is part of a broader reintegration into the community but it makes sense. Being able to provide for oneself and one's family supports reintegration and resistance from offending.
