Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health

National Oral Health Policy: Discussion (Resumed)

Dr. Joe Green:

Approximately 1,400 are active. There might be slightly more, but some of the contracts may not be active. Approximately 1.1 million treatments were provided at a cost of slightly less than €60 million to slightly fewer than 390,000 medical card holders. The uptake rate on the scheme is approximately 31%, that is, 31% of adult medical card holders attended a dentist last year, as far as we can tell.

I do not have figures on expenditure under the treatment benefit scheme. My understanding is that the cohort of dentists is approximately 1,600 or slightly higher. It is the same group, with the aforementioned 1,400 dentists being a subset of the 1,600, by and large.
