Budgetary and Fiscal Implications of Climate Change: Discussion

Professor John FitzGerald:

The incentives are probably broadly appropriate for the situation we are in today. What is affecting take-up of electric vehicles is, first, the question of whether they will have the necessary range and, second, whether they are cheaper than standard vehicles. Given that the price is falling all the time and the range is improving, the next consideration is whether the infrastructure is in place to make it work. If we put more incentives in place but the cars cannot be charged, we are going nowhere. The next priority, therefore, is getting the infrastructure rolled out.
