Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality
Implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation: Data Protection Commission
Ms Anna Morgan:
That is right at the current point in time in the context of all of the 49 inquiries that we currently have open. However, the legislative provisions for the authorised officer make it clear that there is scope for persons other than staff of the commission, depending on whether they are deemed to be suitably qualified, to be authorised as authorised officers. In the context of the GDPR and the provision for co-operation in particular joint operations, which can be carried out between European data protection authorities, potentially, the provisions in the 2018 Act will allow for the authorisation of officers from other European data protection agencies to take part in our investigations.
