Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs

Governance and Child Safeguarding Issues in Scouting Ireland: Tusla and Scouting Ireland

10:00 am

Mr. Pat Smyth:

That is a good question. All of the large organisations in Ireland such as the ones to which the Chairman referred have engaged on Children First. Some of them have been exemplary in they way they have done so. The Chairman is correct in saying no other organisation is under the intense level of scrutiny Scouting Ireland has been under. That is because, as we said , the retrospective cases have led us into this space. The challenge for any organisation is to ensure practice, policy and guidelines are sufficient to meet the demands we are all placing on organisations, as well as being members and expecting services from them.
