The Government has decided to amend the Organisation of Working Time Act 1997 to remove the blanket exclusion of the Defence Forces and An Garda Síochána and bring them within the scope of that legislation, subject to the application of the exclusions permitted under the EU working time directive. Last night, I spoke to the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Deputy Regina Doherty, in the context of expediting the legislative changes to remove the blanket exclusion of members of the Defence Forces. The focus is on ensuring compliance with all aspects of the legislation. Significant work has already been undertaken and continues to progress.
