Joint Standing Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands

Seirbhísí trí Ghaeilge (Atógáil): Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte

Mr. Paul Connors:

I will finish that point and answer the Deputy's question. It is a very insightful question because it speaks to the difficulties we have had with the Irish language. Mr. Ó Coileáin has correctly spoken to the difficulty that has existed, which is that there has not been an Irish language strategy in the health services. This is the first proper Irish language strategy for the health services. It has to take in all of these concerns and join up different parts, including health business services, HBS, which is the body that looks after recruitment in the HSE. We still have to identify the needs and gaps upon which we have all touched. It is more advanced in the western Gaeltacht than in other Gaeltachts. That is not to say that others such as Mr. Ó Coileáin and Ms Uí Theighneáin have not been doing their best to fill those gaps. We have to analyse and see what exactly are the demands for the delivery of services through Irish. We have to look at whether the demographic is growing or reducing as per the population. We have to fill those gaps and that needs to be done systematically, working with HBS. That is part of the strategy over the next five years. I hope that, if we are all back here in five years, we will have identified those gaps.
