Residential Tenancies (Greater Security of Tenure and Rent Certainty) Bill 2018 and Anti-Evictions Bill 2018: Discussion

Ms CaitrĂona Walsh:

On the statistics, we were just saying that the figures are dropping in terms of the amount of properties in the rental market over the last two or three years. With any body, there comes a saturation point in terms of regulation. The sector can only be regulated so much before it reaches saturation point and people say they are not bothered with this anymore and it is too much for them. We need to support both the landlords and the tenants and in terms of the landlords, there is an awful lot they need to comply with. There is a lot the tenants need to comply with as well and they are on the hard end of the stick in the relationship between landlords and tenants. We need to try to support both parties in the sector. They are both a crucial part of it and the more successful their relationship, the more successful the sector.
